Certified Birthing From Within Mentor, CLD (CAPPA)
As a certified Birthing From Within™ Mentor and doula, it is my honor to support families through pregnancy, birth, and parenting. Mothers and babies have been my passion for as long as I can remember. I’ve been a La Leche League leader since 1990, now retired but still involved. Eighteen years ago, I was invited to a friend’s birth to assist with breastfeeding afterward. I’ve attended births ever since, intuitively learning to support laboring women and their partners with comfort measures, guiding words, and coping skills. When I first learned about doulas, I knew immediately that I had heard my calling. Upon discovering Birthing From Within and the wisdom of Pam England, that calling was clarified. I’ve been a certified doula since 2006 and a Birthing From Within Mentor since 2008, attending hundreds of families in that time.
My dear husband and I are the parents of three adult children: a son and two daughters. My first two births were surgical births, followed by an unmedicated VBAC, vaginal birth after a cesarean. I learned so much from each of our birth experiences and would not change any of them.
I cherish my time with families, whether it’s as a Birthing From Within Mentor, doula, parenting educator, or lactation educator. I enjoy continually updating and broadening my knowledge to better assist them. Mothers, fathers, babies, and birth will continue to be my passion. It is a joy to stand alongside families during these memorable events in their lives.
CLD (CAPPA), Certified BIRTHING FROM WITHIN® Mentor, Labor Doula, Lactation, Childbirth, and Grandparenting Educator
It is with joy that I offer to families the wisdom, love and support of a woman who has traveled the path ahead of them. When my three children ‘left the nest’ I wondered how to share what I had learned in childbirth and motherhood with the world.
During my first two births I felt alone and frightened and was unsuccessful at breastfeeding. In my third pregnancy I connected with support groups, and hired a midwife and a doula, which created a much more positive experience. I felt empowered. My calling grew clear: to help other families have empowering experiences. With eager enthusiasm I obtained my doula certification and began accepting clients in 2004. Since then I have attended over 250 births.
Remembering my own experiences and being a part of so many births, I soon became aware of the need to help parents, before their births, through education. A lifelong process of personal and professional growth began when I first read Pam England’s book Birthing From Within and found the philosophy was a perfect fit with my own. My journey continues even now, through advanced certifications and workshops.
I am also trained in optimal fetal positioning techniques and facilitate workshops teaching parents how to help babies find an easy passage as an adjunct to my Birthing From Within classes. Now I am a grandmother. I have learned firsthand how imperative it is for new grands to know what has changed since THEY gave birth so I developed a class just for them. My role is to mentor and support families. I look forward to serving yours.
CLD (DONA), Labor and Postpartum Doula, BIRTHING FROM WITHIN® Mentor
Becoming a labor and postpartum doula was my goal since the birth of my two daughters, who are now college graduates. My passion is to help women have a safe, positive birth and postpartum experience, empowered by knowledge and informed consent. I am certified with DONA International as a labor doula and I am a childbirth education mentor for Birthing From Within.
CPD (CAPPA), Postpartum Doula
I always knew that I adored babies and loved being with them, but it wouldn’t be until many years later that I discovered my calling as a postpartum doula. Being able to help families get off to a great start with their new or growing family is one of my greatest joys. I tailor my services to best meet the needs of the families I support. I include breastfeeding education and support, baby care, soothing techniques, and baby wearing instruction as well as meal prep, laundry, organizing and helping with siblings in what I can offer your family.
Melanie Belk Nasmyth
Placenta Encapsulation Specialist
I am a mother of four, and began encapsulating placentas after experiencing the benefits first-hand with my third child. With a background in biology and chemistry, and after working in the birth community as a doula since 2007, I have found Placenta Encapsulation to be the perfect combination of these interests. I love working with new mothers to help create a smooth postpartum experience, and believe I bring compassion and professionalism to my job. I trained as a Placenta Encapsulation Specialist with Placenta Benefits and Full Circle Encapsulation, and have encapsulated over 100 placentas. In addition, I hold certificates in Blood Born Pathogens and as a Georgia Food Handler to ensure the highest quality in safety. I work in a dedicated space used only for placenta encapsulation, and follow strict OSHA guidelines for sanitization. But beyond the technical aspects of it, I also find my job fascinating and feel a deep reverence with each placenta I encounter.
I’ve been a labor doula since 2001 and a midwifery student since 2010. Married in 1992, we have three wonderful boys, Richard, Liam and Aidan. Richard was birthed into the world in 1997 through a medicated, intervention-filled birth. It was an amazing and empowering experience. With Liam in 2000, I took Birthing From Within classes, and was able to have a wonderful, non-medicated birth in awareness. When Aidan was born in 2004, I experienced an incredible waterbirth. I have been involved with La Leche League and breastfed all my children.
I first felt the calling to work with birthing women while in London on an internship through Emory University. I had the opportunity to observe both vaginal and cesarean births, and I fell in love with the process. I trained as a labor doula in 1996 just before learning of my first pregnancy, so attending births would have to wait until my children were older. After Liam , our third, was born I attended another training and earned my doula certification.
In 2010 I had the opportunity to start working towards my dream; becoming a midwife. I have apprenticed with two local midwifery groups over the last three years. I will slowly continue with my midwifery education journey and eventually become a Certified Professional Midwife.
I welcome and look forward to the opportunity to work as a doula, with new and growing families as they begin their own exciting journeys.
CLD(DONA), PCD(DONA), LMT, Certified Hypnotherapist
When I attended my first birth in 1988, I had no idea that my experience would be so profound. I have been supporting women through their childbearing year ever since, as a birthing coach, doula and touch therapist.
My mission is to provide compassionate, tender care and support for you and your family throughout your pregnancy, birth and the early days of parenthood. With respect to your privacy and dignity, you will receive individualized personal attention, reassurance, and loving support to ensure a safe and satisfying, empowered birth.
I honor and trust birth as a natural transition for women and their families. My role is to provide unconditional support for the Mom, her partner and family through their experience of labor, birth and the postpartum days without imposing my beliefs or opinions. Supporting your partner so that they are able to participate at their own comfort level is equally as important to me. I am available to you throughout your pregnancy, including guidance when designing your birth plan and in-home support during early labor. I have experience with surrogacy, multiples, VBAC and like-gender couples.
I am a licensed massage therapist and infant massage instructor, Watsu practitioner and am delighted to offer caring, therapeutic touch as part of my service as a holistic caregiver. I am also a certified hypnotist and tap into my broad education and intuitive gifts to assist you in your birthing time. Although certified as a post partum doula, I am not offering that service at this time.
LMT, Labor Doula
The first time I was astounded by the power of birth was when I supported my sister during the birth of my niece Maile in 1989. Passionately intrigued, I attended Maternidad La Luz Midwifery School in 1992 and began attending home births in 1993 where I lived in California. My precious daughter Ayisha was born in 1996 at home in the water. In the last 2 decades, I have attended many trainings including labor, VBAC and breastfeeding support, and have attended hundreds of births in the home, hospital, and birth center settings.
I believe that birth is a profound initiation into motherhood. Women discover a power within themselves during birth that they can draw on when the challenging moments of parenting arise. BIRTH MATTERS!! It is by far the most potent experience in a woman’s life AND lays the foundation for the health and well being of her baby.
Having recently moved to Atlanta, I am now gratefully serving as a labor doula. I offer knowledge of the birth process and understanding of hospital and home birth procedures to help women and their families choose the birth options that best meet their needs. I offer therapeutic touch and a wide range of coping skills for labor, and a calming presence throughout the prenatal, birth, and postpartum time. I consider a woman’s deep values and needs to help her create the most sacred and empowering birth experience possible. I am also a massage therapist of 25 years offering in-home prenatal and postpartum massage, and I offer body centered self discovery and compassionate relationship support. Yo Hablo Espanol! I draw from all of my skills as I help mothers on their own birthing journey.
I became interested in birth six years ago when decided to help a friend realize her dream of becoming a mother. I was a surrogate for her. My friend had struggled through many pregnancies and could not successfully carry her babies to term. I saw her heart break as she was unable to create the family she so wanted. I don’t know if it was faith, or fate, but I felt a call to offer my womb. I gave birth to her baby girl, and I know I did what was needed.
While preparing for birth, I expressed my desire to birth ‘naturally’. I had no idea how I would accomplish this, or what doulas were, but trusted the process at the time. I was shocked by the mostly negative reactions I received from everyone.Without support, education or trust in my abilities, and, after laboring naturally for 12 hours, I gave in to everyones insistence and accepted an epidural that I did not want.
I know more, now, and I long to help women learn to trust their instincts and make decisions that are right for them, even if that includes medication.I want women to know that they have choices during birth, and I can help them and their partners during the process by helping them know what questions to ask, and reminding them of those choices.
The experiences of birth can have a lasting affect. Ultimately, I want to help women and their partners feel empowered as they become parents.I have completed my doula training through DONA and am working toward my Labor Doula certification. I live in the North Atlanta area, and can support parents in Alpharetta, Cumming, Dawsonville and Gainesville.
CCCE (CAPPA), BIRTHING FROM WITHIN® Mentor
My journey as a mother, childbirth educator, breastfeeding peer counselor, and now Birthing From Within™ Mentor grows deeper and richer by the day. I find sincere joy in gently supporting mothers and partners as they make their unique journeys into parenthood and beyond. I live with my husband and two daughters in Northwest Georgia.
My goals as a Mentor are to prepare you holistically for the profound rite of passage into parenthood, whatever unknown twists and turns may lie ahead, and to help you unlock compassion and unconditional love for yourself in each moment of your odyssey. I’m drawn to the relatively lost arts of storytelling as well as to rituals, rites, and celebrations of the childbearing year. I believe pain and intensity are relatively inevitable during childbirth, but that suffering does not have to be. Your individual needs and process of self discovery guide my work as a Mentor, meaning that each mentoring relationship and class differs from the next to meet your needs.
I first became inspired by childbirth while I was pregnant with my son, Noah. I hired a doula, watched birth documentaries, read books and I was addicted to pregnancy vlogs. I was shocked at my lack of knowledge and naivety. I had no idea that women’s bodies were capable of such amazing things. I was driven to give birth and care for my baby the way that nature intended. Unfortunately, Noah passed away when I was 28 weeks along. After his passing, I was lost and had no idea what my purpose was or if I even had one. After many months of tears, heartache and confusion, I finally realized that I did have a purpose, and so did Noah. My purpose was to carry on the birth inspiration that I discovered during my pregnancy. I knew I wanted to spread the knowledge and confidence that so many women were lacking in their pregnancies and births. I immediately began to research the different birth careers that I could pursue and I knew that being a doula, and ultimately a midwife, was the path that I wanted to embark on! I began my certification with Childbirth International in August of 2013 and I am currently working on its completion. My goal is to give power back to women by providing them with the education and support they need in order to achieve their empowered birth!
Labor Doula and Childbirth Educator, CLD, CCCE (CAPPA)
I am many things, but my greatest identity is found in being a mother, teacher, and nurturer. My husband Charles and I homeschool our three mostly-awesome children: Jake (1997), Sam (2003) and Grace (2005), and I also use my education degree teaching in a classroom two days a week. Our personal childrearing practices include breastfeeding, attachment parenting, co-sleeping, and vegetarian nutrition.
My passion for birthing has been growing within me for much of my life. After a 6-year struggle with infertility, I began to research and implement natural methods of conception, and that led very naturally into an interest in healthy, natural pregnancy and childbirth. Through each of my own births, I have learned that birth can be much more than an isolated event; it is a journey to be embraced and experienced. It is my belief that the emotional components of birth are just as strong as the physical, and that women should be understood and supported in all aspects of their birthing experience. I consider it my privilege to work with women to help them find their own voice and assist them in achieving the birth that they desire.
I am a certified Labor Doula and Childbirth Educator through CAPPA. I am also a trained Lactation Educator. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, logic puzzles, and scrapbooking, and I am an avid collector of all things Pepsi.
Doula, CBE, Student Midwife
I am a mother of three children, two born by cesarean section and the third born into the arms of my husband at home. Much like pregnancy and birth, my journey as a birth worker has had many twists and turns; beginning with the two surgical births that my birth worker passion has grown from. I’ve gone down blissful roads of training and education leading me to train as a Doula and a Childbirth Educator and work to become a Midwife. I am also on the road to becoming a Birthing from Within ® Mentor. The education part of my journey never ceases and I am forever learning from the families that I meet, the babies that I hold and the wonderful mentors I have as my support team.
Whether you desire to have a birth at home or in the hospital, my whole hearted belief is that “Normal Birth is Possible” so I wish to prepare you for your journey by providing you with the care, support and, most importantly, the knowledge that you will need to have YOUR best birth.
