Labor Doula and Childbirth Educator
I’ve been attending births as a doula since 2002. My calling to guide new families through the transition into parenthood was so profound that I threw myself into it, and within a year became certified as a labor doula and childbirth educator. In 2004 I attended the introductory Birthing From Within® childbirth educator training, and I continue to use the tools and strategies I learned Itoday—as a doula, as a mother, and in my daily life. I believe in encouraging new parents to follow their intuition and cultivate a solution-focused mindset. I also believe in the “normal-ness” of birth and breastfeeding and that what parents often need most is a calm, reassuring presence to remind them of what they already instinctively know.
My husband and I share four children in our wonderful, never-boring blended family, three girls and one boy: 17, 16, 14, 13. I actually like having teenagers! Who knew.
There’s a line in the book The Color Purple that I love: One of the characters, a woman named Sophia, is insulted and challenged to a fight. All eyes turn to her boyfriend, expecting him to step in and defend her. “I don’t fight Sophia’s battles,” he says. “My job is to love her and take her where she wants to go.” That sums it up so well. I am with you during this event of birth, encouraging you, compassionately helping you get to where you want to go—and helping to align you with a birth experience where no battles are needed.
